Doctor Who new companion Pearl Mackie playing Bill Potts

After almost a year off the air, and after waiting 8 months since the announcement, on April 15 whovians finally got to meet Pearl Mackie, the new Doctor Who companion.Steven Moffat the show’s writer and producer at the BBC was excited by her fresh face. She has so far starred in the first two episodes in series 10. Pearl Mackie admits that she has never seen the series. Mackie was born when Doctor Who was not airing which then began when she was 16 years old.   It was Mackie's lack of knowledge in the Doctor Who franchise that partially helped get her cast in the role of Bill. Casting director Andy Pryor states in his interview with Radio Times, “she arrived fully formed, with a strong personality and a strong sense of herself. A great deal of humour too, which is something we were looking for in this case.”   Mackie’s character is the first openly gay companion in Doctor Who. Talking about her character’s sexuality, she says “It shouldn’t be a big deal in the 21st Century It’s about time isn’t it”. Bill Potts makes her first appearance on the show in the Doctor’s office at a university. At the time of the first episode, Bill works as a canteen assistant at the university.
It has already been announced that Mackie will only be staying on for one series. Her departure was a joint decision made by the BBC and, Moffat’s replacement, Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall.
